A $5 piece of furniture gets a new mid century look

How to transform an old sideboard into a pretty mid century style sideboard. This is what I call a BIG furniture makeover

We moved to our new flat not long ago so, as you might guess, it looks pretty messy right now.

We needed some extra storage space in our new house so when I spotted this piece that was the perfect size for just 5 bucks, I purchased it with the idea of turning it into something completely different:

The price was fantastic but the look... what can I say. It was not Pinterest worthy, let's put it that way.

At first I was a bit reluctant to take the legs off because they were the cutest part of the thing but couldn't really change the style if I kept them so, off they went.

One of the perks of buying poor quality furniture is that the cheap construction makes it easier to take some bits off and transform it as you like. After the legs, off went the the moldings and the handle and suddenly the piece was a blank canvas.

There are three main characteristics that almost every mid century piece has:
  1. Simple lines.
  2. Conical legs.
  3. Cool handles.
Without the original legs and the moldings, my piece of furniture met the first characteristic: simple lines. Actually, at this point it was a blank canvas.

After sanding and varnishing, the wood looked quite pretty, better than I'd expected, considering that it isn't solid wood at all. It's veneer.

Though my initial idea was to leave the natural color of the wood, certain parts of the cabinet had to be painted so as to cover all the imperfections, marks and scratches left by the moldings.

There were only two mid century characteristics missing, the conical legs:

And the cool doorknobs. I made them by cutting two thin pieces of wood and staining them the same colour as the rest of the wood.

This is how I transformed quite an ugly find into a sleek mid century piece of furniture. It wasn't my initial idea but I really like the contrast between the black bits and the wood and I also love that little bit of bling that are the hinges.

I love my diy mid century inspired sideboard. It'll look great with the rest of the living room decor.

Do you like it as much as I do? title="Diy mid century sideboard"
